History and Architecture:
The Church ceased to be used for religious purposed in the late 20th Century, when its Sunday school was demolished for a car park, but the building survived under a heritage listing (2001) that acknowledges its origins with Adelaide’s Scotch Baptists.
Howard Culley, volunteered to draw up plans for a gothic-style chapel in 1921. Finally tenders were called in 1924 and Goodenough and Son were chosen to construct the chapel for £8,382. The foundation stone was laid by “Mrs Gardson and Mrs A. Cleveland” in 1925, and the official services to mark the opening of the new chapel were on April 24-25,1926.
The church construction made late use of dimensions bluestone (from the Tapley Hill quarries), Murray bridge freestone and colour-blend brick panels, while the Sunday school building to the rear was typically of bluestone construction with stuccoed dressings. The Nave is 40 ft. wide and is 35 ft from floor to ceiling. The building has a length of 90 ft. over all. The furnishings are of Tasmanian blackwood.
A Foundation stone reads, " This stone was laid to the Glory of God and the service of Man by Mrs Mary Gard September 12th 1925".
