History and Architecture:
Bathurst's first St Stephen's Presbyterian Church was built in 1835. In 1871 the present church was begun, with the foundation stone being laid on 17 September that year. The building was completed the following year and dedicated in September 1872. Designed by Thomas Rowe, the church was built by James Douglas, with the construction supervisor being H M Sadlier.
A good example of Victorian Academic Gothic architecture. Built of red brick, the church has a steeply pitched, parapetted gable roof which is clad with slate (originally it was shingled); there are several gabled vents to the roof. The broached spire stands on a three level tower and is sheathed in copper (it too was originally shingled).
