History and Architecture:

Catholic families began moving into the mining town of Beaconsfield during the 1880s. Within a decade, they had built a solid timber Church dedicated to St Francis Xavier. On May 11, 1890, Monsignor Daniels Beechinor of Launceston accompanied his uncle, Archbishop Daniei Murphy, to the West Tamar town for the laying of the foundation stone of the new church. Built by the firm of Cowling of Launceston it opened for worship on June 26 1891.
