History and Architecture:

The first resident priest appointed to the area was Rev. Fr. John Kavanagh. His parish of Portland included Belfast, as Port Fairy was then called, for he signs himself as minister of Portland and Port Fairy. Like his predecessor Fr. Walsh, Fr. Kavanagh served as a chaplain on Norfolk Island.

The foundation of the church was laid on 7th February 1886. It was blessed on 7th November 1886 by Bishop Moore assisted by Fr Marshall and Fr Shine. The Gothic style brick church was 64 foot long and cost £3,000. Additions were made in 1918 at a cost of £500.
