History and Architecture:

The first church was a wooden structure built in 1861 in the northwest corner of the church grounds and cost £150.00. St John's Church of England at Forbes was designed by B Backhouse and constructed between 1874 and 1877. It was built on land donated by Josiah Strickland who also gave £500 to the church building fund. The original contractor never completed the church but left the district and never returned. The builders were Rodgerson and Co and it cost £2,050.00. The building is designed in Victorian Gothic style, although the spire is incomplete, the squat tower finishing in a louvered, flat topped belfry.

In 1909 additions to the church included chancel, lower tower and vestry. The roof was formerly clad with shingles, but in 1933 these were replaced with slate tiles.
