History and Architecture:
The pamphlet in part reads,
The construction of a church at Hamilton came as the direct result of concern felt by those who had settled within a wide area, namely from Gretna to Ousebridge. The first meeting was arranged for 26th September 1831, and the formation of a Building Committee was instituted, with David Burn, the dramatist (Rothenwood) as Secretary, and the Assistant District Magistrate, Lieutenant H.B.Torlesse (ex R.N.) ('Rathmore) as Treasurer.
The design of the church, which expresses the influence current at that tine of the 'churchmanship' in the Home Country, was the work of a Ur Winch, chief clerk to the Government architect, J.L. Archer, who was responsible for the final plans. One of the significant factors in the design, is that only one entry is provided in the entire building.
There seems to be some conflict concerning the actual person responsive for the building of the church as well as the actual cost. The centenary booklet (1934) written by W.G.Brown lists the contractor as Wm Sibley, a resident of the district, living at Hollow Tree, and K.R.von Stieglitz in his history of the district,(1963) refers to a contractor of New Norfolk, S.J.Turnbull.
The Foundation stone was laid by Governor Arthur on the 26th of June 1834 and services commenced in February 1837 by Chaplain the Reverend M.J. Mayers.
