History and Architecture:

The first denominational building in Healesville was the (hunch of England. In the late 1860's on a plot of land ( CAll, ( CA 11, Section F ) donated in perpetuity by John Chandler, chandler and John Carter built a small paling and shingle church with timber cut from nearby trees; this is where the vicarage now stands. This building was opened by the Rev. R. Barlow on the first of January 1871 as part of the Parish of Lilydale. Services were irregular until, from August 1875, the Rev. Mr McCord began to came to Healesville twice a month to hold services in the afternoons. The Venerable Archdeacon Theodore C. B. Stretch came at intervals to administer the sacraments.*

Attendance in those days was more challenging than it is now; if it rained the roof leaked and the ladies put up their umbrellas to deflect the streams.*
