The first services were held in a house. Church News of June 1883 states that St. James' was erected in 1826 or 27 but Church News of January 1947 says that building commenced in 1829. The church which was designed by John Lee Archer, was consecrated on the 10th of May, 1838.
A plaque on the church reads, "The original church on this site was complete in 1834. Fifty years later it was demolished after a large crack appeared in the wall. The Foundation stone of the new church was laid on 2nd May 1883 and the contractor was Walter Fish of Oatlands. It was consecrated by Bishop Sandford on 29th April 1888 and was described at the time as "of the usual style of Mr Hunter's buildings, excellent in design and substantial in construction".
