Kyneton, VIC - Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic

History and Architecture:

The Foundation stone was laid on 20 September 1857 by the Most Reverend James Alypius Goold Bishop of Melbourne. The church is construction of blue stone. The Architect was Charles Hansom and the builder was Andrew Strombucco. The tender price was 2,500.00. Richard Jones quarried the local stone.

William Wardell supervised the completion of the building. A marble alter was installed in 1923 and Gothic altar rails in 1926 in memory of Dean Hegarty. The original windows were installed prior to 1869 and were of English Cathedral glass however only one remains today behind the choir loft.

Originally surrounded by a white picket fence that was replaced by a hedge which was later replaced by the blue stone wall of today.

The first service was held in 1852 in the Criterion Hotel a timber building at the time that had a stone addition added at the time it was re names the Wedgwood.
