History and Architecture:
The first St. Matthew's Anglican Church at Leadville, was a slab construction on the side of the now closed Post Office in Garland Street. The land on which this Church stood was acquired by the Trustees, George Henry Cox, Edward James Lowe and William Latimer on 11th April 1892, and it is thought the Church was built very shortly afterwards. Thus the Leadville area now had two Anglican Churches as there was already an Anglican Church at Denison Town a few kilometres away.
The Old Slab Church was removed from Leadville in 1918, and was re-erected at Hannah's Bridge, where it was re-named St. Luke's. It was later demolished after becoming infested with white ants, and a new Church building was erected some time later.
The building had the dimensions of 52 x 24 feet and was be built of brick and stone. The block of land was generously donated by Mr. C. L. Garland.
The church's foundation stone was laid in 1914 and was opened on September 29 1917. The church closed in 1994. It is now a community centre.
