History and Architecture:

In April 1881, 30,000 bricks were purchased from the Lily Tile Works in Beresford Road and plans were prepared by the Rev. Ager. The original plan was for a church with vestry at the side. This was changed to place the vestry at the rear, and work began.

The Foundation Stone was laid on September 6th 1881 by C.J. Ham, prominent citizen and Baptist, later twice Mayor of Melbourne. The total cost of the Church building project, including Twenty-seven pounds ten shillings for the land, was Four hundred and eighty-one pounds thirteen shillings.

Use of the name "Tabernacle" is first made in August 1881, but no reason is put forward for the move. The building was opened for Divine Worship on Sunday April 30th 1882 by Dr. Thos. Porter. Services were held morning and evening amid rejoicing and celebration.

Church members subscribed to a fund which purchased a pedal organ in 1882.
