History and Architecture:
The first Mass is this district was celebrated by Fr Symth at the home of John Campion, Campion Road Meredith in 1838.
The first Catholic church was built in 1860 on a block of land in Mercer Street. This present church was built by Smith Bros and R Dudderidge. It was opened and dedicated by Archbishop Slattery on the feast of the Assumption 15 August 1890. The church was extended and enlarged and the first presbytery was built in 1878 with Lethbridge bluestone with facings of Waun Ponds limestone.
The stone was removed in 1898 - 1899 and replaced with weatherboards as it was thought stone made the building too cold.
This building was sold for removal in about 1960. The present brick presbytery was built in 1961.
