History and Architecture:

A Heritage board at the front of the church reads, " Anglican worship in Penola was carried out in a variety of buildings throughout the 1850's until the 60's. The congregation sometimes shared a building with the Presbyterians and sometimes used the Institute building. For many of the early years the congregation was served by travelling priests.

At one stage a Rev. Poole rode sixty five miles from Robe once a month to hold services. On January 8th, 1873, the foundation stone of a now church was laid and St. Mary's Church of England was consecrated by a Bishop Kennion on February 12th, 1886, after the chancel was finished. The architect for the church was Thomas Artaud, local accountant, who played a prominent role in the early development of the district. The builders were local stonemasons, Michael Harris and William -Blight. The Church Hall, across the road, was built in 1899 for use as a Sunday school".
