History and Architecture:

An Historical Board in front of the church reads in part, "Until the first St Matthews Church was built services were held in the Transcontinental Hotel. The first church, of weatherboard construction, was built on land purchased by the Synod of the Church of England in the Diocese of Adelaide Inc. from William C. Greenslade, licensee of the Transcontinental Hotel in July 1880. The church was opened on September 26, 188o by Bishop Short. Although small in size, it was intended for future use as a schoolroom. However, it was not until 1897 that a start was made on a more permanent structure, with the old church being used for the last time on September 19,1897.

The Church was designed by William Kingsnorth Mallyon, a pioneer banker who was the first manager of the National Bank at Ouorn when it opened in 1878.

Construction began on May 20 1897 and the foundation stone was laid on June 26 by the Very Rev Dean Matrryat. The Church costing nearly 700 was dedicated on September 21 1897 (St Matthews Day).

A Foundation stone on the Church Hall reads, " A.M.D.G. This stone was laid by E.N. Twopeny Esq J.P. 21 March 1926".
