History and Architecture:
Saint Stephen's Church, designed by Mr. Pickersgill, architect, is built in English Bond style of local red clay bricks relieved by darker glazed bricks in every third bonding.
The footings and sloping parapets are of north-eastern granite and the buttresses are capped with the same, while the lancet windows have hooded mouldings of stucco.
Built in 1863, the west wall of Saint Stephen's is finished with a central turret topped by a belfry with open work bell cage surmounted by an early English style broached spire.
In 1984 all the wooden parts of the belfry were replaced with and exactly reproduced in mild and stain-less steel to the design of Mr. I. Jasper and executed by J. Furphy and Sons. The splendid outline has been preserved and is highlighted by the sun's reflection on the steeple's celtic cross finial.
In 1923 the chancel was extended and new furnishings added. More recent modifications have adapted the church for modern liturgical use and created a more spacious appearance.
A vestry, designed by Mr. A. C. McKnight, was added to the north of the chancel. Soon after, the original slate roof of the church was replaced with modern tiles.
