Seymour, VIC - St Mary's Catholic

History and Architecture:

In 1855 a grant of land was given by the Government. It was situated at the northern end of Emily Street, but it was found to be unsatisfactory because it was too far from the town and was subject to flooding. This grant was later cancelled and in 1869 another grant was made of the present site. Patrick Hanna who donated the church bell gave additional land nearby.

The church was commenced in 1870 and Archbishop Goold laid the foundation stone on December 4 1871. The church was constructed of solid brick, and seated three to four hundred people. It was partly completed by 1872 and finally completed in 1887.

As the population increased it was decided to build a new and larger church. This was commenced in mid-1938 and completed in June 1939. The builder and Architect was Bart Moriatti of Melbourne.

The new church was consecrated in 1945 by Archbishop Daniel Mannix. The former church was then converted into the parish hall.

The original two story presbytery was built in 1891, whilst Father Hartnett was parish priest. It’s estimated cost was £1,200.00 and was enlarged in 1927.

Prior to 1890 Seymour was part of the Kilmour parish. In 1890 Seymour became a seperate parish when Rev. Father Hartnett was appointed the parish priest.
