History and Architecture:

Its recorded that as early as 1852, the Very Rev. Dr. P. B. Geoghegan was seeking a salary of 30 pounds per year from the Denominational Schools' Board for a teacher for a proposed school in the district of Stratford. This did not eventuate. In 1853, after a visit by Bishop Goold to Gippsland, the Very Rev. Fr. Fitzpatrick V. G. made an application for two acres of land bounded by Dixon, Blackburn and Merrick Streets for church pur-poses. Application made on 25th May, 1853 was granted but no action was taken until September, 1859, when Messrs. During this time, Rev. Fr. Verling, who had been in-stalled as Pastor of all Gippsland, paid occasional visits to Stratford, celebrating Mass in hotels and private homes.

A Catholic Church was established about 1884. A Foundation stone reads, DOM Sub Invocatione Sanctifatritii MDCCCLXXXIV".

About 1950, after some of the external brickwork had started to soften and there were a few areas of dampness on the inside walls, it was decided to concrete render the outside walls. The work was carried out by Mr. Cliff Gamlin of Sale.
