The first church was opened in 1869 on land donated by Mr A,F. Lindsay. Rev. Ridgway Newland led the first major group of settlers to Encounter Bay in 1839. One of the first tasks of this group was the erection of their church "hut", the Tabernacle. The building decayed and was replaced by this structure in 1869.
This is the second Newland Memorial church, built in 1927. The foundation stone was laid on 10 March 1868 by the widow of the Reverend Ridgeway William Newland Mrs R.W. Newland.
