History and Architecture:
A Georgian Church, constructed entirely by convict labour using sandstock bricks and sandstone. Governor Lachlan Macquarie invited Francis Howard Greenway to draw up plans for a permanent church however the contract was awarded to Henry Kitchen, architect and builder.
William Cox - who had been commissioned in the New South Wales Corps, but was mainly occupied in roadmaking, building, and developing his properties - was engaged to make 220,000 bricks for the building.
The Corner stone was laid on 11 October 1817 by Governor Macquarie. All buildings were completed between 1810 - 1825 including the Stables and Rectory with the Church being completed in 1820.
The old wooden font, replaced in 1846, was later situated in one of the pews. The dominant element is a sculptural square tower with octagonal cupola, axially arranged with a rectangular nave and semicircular apse.
In 1937 restoration work on the Rectory was supervised by Professor Wilkinson of the Faculty of Architecture Sydney University. In 1965 the Church was restored by the State Government and the National Trust.
