First services were held in the tent town south of the current location of the town. The first church was opened in 1864 and this was moved to its present site in 1858. A new church was opened in 1926 on land donated by John Carre Riddell who had a large land holding in the area.

In 1927 the Church was built and was dedicated in April 1927 having cost £400. In 1967 St. John's was burnt down in disasterous bush fires.
