St Peter's was built on the site of the Old Jockey Club Inn, in 1894 by James Madden, to a design by Ipswich architect Henry Wyman. It was officially opened and blessed on 4th November 1894 by Archbishop Dunne, who had officiated at the request of Father Andrew Horan of Ipswich. The Church was sold in 2022.

In 1905 the Kewell Zion Lutheran church was opened, four years after a three-roomed Lutheran school was built. The church was enlarged in 1938 and a hall was built in 1965. Both the school and the church have closed (1959, 1992).

The first Church was opened in 1915. Its foundation stone was laid in 1913 and was constructed of sun dired mud bricks. The Foundation stone of the next Church was laid on 3 March 1973 by the Right Reverend B.R. Hunter Bishop of Riverena.

It seems that the town of Leongatha had its beginnings just before the south Gippsland railway line reached that area in 1892. The first Church of England service in Leongatha was held in the home of Miss Shingler on 25 February 1890. It was conducted by Archdeacon Henry Langley and the Reverend C.J. Chambers from Foster.

John Kendall dedicated the foundation stone of the Gothic-revival style Church of St Peter and St Paul on 21 August 1859, on land donated by Joseph Whatman of Myrtle Farm. The original church building (the long section with a tall arched window) was one of Milton’s earliest buildings, built by John Chandle and A. Bond in 1860.
