The Foundation stone was laid on 28 February 1914 by Reverand Arthur Davidson. The church was founded in 1851. The church hall was erected in 1916 and the foundation stone was laid by Reverand C. Neville. In 1914, the congregation moved to the present building in what then was a new suburb.

This Church replaced an earlier timber church of 1847. The foundation stone was laid on 4 September 1855 by William Witton, a local preacher. The rectangular plan church of unknown design origin was erected by Barnes, McGut and Trevaskis, using locally quarried basalt combined with volcanic tufa stone quoins and other dressings.
