History and Architecture:

Baptists on the Gold Fields were not numerous, but in 1853 the first meeting was held at White Hills. Mr. and Mrs. John Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. Jones and Miss Jones met for worship in a tent.

In 1854 a slab-hut was erected near to the present site of Wilkie Park in White Hills Road. Shortly afterwards a weatherboard building was erected in Epsom for £400. Meanwhile, Baptists in Bendigo and in the southern portion of the township began to assemble themselves together.

At the invitation of Mr. William Smith, the Rev. Isaac New (of Albert Street Church, East Melbourne) visited Sandhurst with a view to the establishment of a Church, and the first meeting to that end is referred to in the opening paragraph of this record. The Mechanics Institute (now portion of the School of Mines) and the drapery store of Garnet Fosdyke are mentioned as meeting places of a small, hopeful band.
