History and Architecture:
Masses were first offered by Father O'Brien in the court room of the Caulfield Town Hall.
The design is in the Gothic style and incorporates the cross into the design of the churches. Holy Cross was built in this manner, with a central nave measuring 28 metres in length and 11 metres in width. The two side porches at the altar end protrude beyond the nave for four metres on each side and are 7 metres wide, accounting for one quarter of the church's length. This provided for a sanctuary 7 metres in width which was elevated from the main floor of the church by one step. Although the side chapels are original, the exterior walls of these did not allow for the present bay window structure, which was a 1960s addition. The main narthex measures only two and a half metres from the original Glenhuntly Road entrance to the doorway leading into the central nave. The original building only stretched as far as the present day side chapels :Ind sanctuary.
The Foundation stone was laid on 23 May 1937 by the Most Reverend D. Mannix D.D. Archbishop of Melbourne. The Architect was O.H. Jorgensen.
