Corinda, QLD - St Joseh's Catholic

History and Architecture:

A local architect, Mr Geo Trotter jnr, prepared the plans for the first Church and supervised the construction, which was carried out by Mr William Ross. The original contract was for five hundred and twenty-three pounds, plus the cost of the gallery and seating. Additionally, a further nineteen pounds was directed to incidental expenses. The building was positioned where the current Parish Office stands, on the corner of Oxley Road and Clewley street. It was constructed of wood with iron roofing. The main portion covered an area of forty-seven feet by twenty-seven feet, with two sacristy doors at the eastern end.

The foundation stone was laid on 28 April 1912 at Corinda by Fr J. F. McCarthy of Red Hill.  On 3 November 1912 St Joseph’s Catholic Church Corinda was blessed and opened by Coadjutor Archbishop James Duhig.

The occasion of the blessing and laying of the foundation stone was witnessed by a large assembly of residents of Corinda, Graceville, Oxley; Darra, Goodna, Redbank Plains, Beaudesert, Ipswich, Yeerongpilly, and the Brisbane city. Although reported as a stone laying it was in fact a "stump capping".
