History and Architecture:
A small band of soldiers and a handful of convicts formed the congregation at George Town's first Mass, celebrated on June 1, 1821, by Tasmania's pioneer priest, Father Philip Conolly. For a century and a half, the little holiday town seemed lazily quiescent, only to come alive at holiday time when a horde of sun-worshippers from Launceston passed through on their way to the coast at Low Head.
A new Lady of the Star of the Sea church, dedicated by Archbishop Sir Guilford Young, opened when Father Buckley was pastor on April 11 1978. It cost $170,000.
A bronze plate on the wall of the church reads, " Resting in Peace Leonard Maxwell Anderson OFS Ecumenical Brother of the Order of Franciscan Seculars 8th January 1948 2nd November 2013. Loved husband of Trish Loved father of Louise, Lauren and Tamara and Loved Grandfather of Sarah, Joshua and Isabelle. I have finished what Jesus had inspired me to do. May you bring to completion what he will inspire you to accomplish. St Francis of Assisi".
