History and Architecture:

The Parish of Mentone was created in 1904, when the area encompassing Mentone, Parkdale, Cheltenham, Highett, Beaumaris, Sandringham, Mordialloc, Edithvale and Chelsea was cut off from the “Brighton Mission”, which was ministered by priests residing in the present Parish of St James Gardenvale.

The specially selected Glen Iris bricks rise in a gently tapered curve to the great tower, the highest point in Mentone.  The crown of concrete, made on site, is our hope of the ‘crown of eternal life’ in heaven.  Beneath the cross is "Patrick", the bell, founded by Matthew O"Byrne in Ireland in 1959.

The Church was blessed and opened by Archbishop Simmonds on March 13th 1960 and Solemnly Consecrated by Bishop Arthur Fox on May 19th 1965.

A Foundation stone reads, " This stone symbol of Christ Chief corner stone of the Church was blessed and set by His Grace Archbishop Simonds 15th December 1957. Rev P O'Hanlon P.P. Architects in Association S.J. Moran Fowler Mansfield & Maclurcan, Builder T Bonnice".
