History and Architecture:

The original chapel was built 1799-1803, replacing a temporary place of worship opened in 1796. By 1846 the church building was dilapidated and by 1852 was demolished. A Foundation stone was laid on 14th August 1852 by Bishop Broughton.

Lieutenant John Watts added in 1820 twin towers of four storeys, square in plan with stuccoed brick walls, stone quoins, eaves, corbels and foundations. Each is roofed by a broached spire. Walls are unadorned except for small windows and clock. Chapel demolished 1852 and a new sandstone nave built. Transepts added in 1883. These later additions with slate roofs are both of Romanesque Revival style.

Between 1817 and 1819, a facade incorporating twin towers topped with spires was added at the western end where the vestry had been. Made out of brick, the facade, towers and spires were copied from those of St Mary's Church, Reculver, in Kent, England. The foundation stone of two transepts designed by Blacket and Sons was laid on 24 April 1883.

Organ:

The present instrument, of national significance, is one of the most substantial and best-preserved J.W. Walker organs of its period, and installed in 1863 at a cost of £359. In 1880-81 three prepared-for stops (Great Trumpet 8, Swell Oboe 8 and Pedal Open Bass 16) were added and in c.1903 the instrument was moved from a west-end gallery to its present position.
