History and Architecture:

A Henry Goss, who was born in Devonshire in 1802 and came to South Australia in 1940, established a class meeting at Payneham in 1840. This group grew and built the first Wesleyan Church in Henry Street, it being opened on April 20 1851. It still stands, being part of the San Georgio Community Centre. The cause continued to grow and this building soon proved to be inadequate, so a new Church was erected attached to the northern end of the first building.*

This second Church was opened on October 24, 1858 and the first Church vas used as a school-row, for both Sunday School and day school classes. An addition, in the form of an infant classroom, was built in 1894. By 1881 the premises at Henry Street were inadequate and the decision was made to build a new and larger Church.*

It is evident that moves were made to obtain the new site quite a while before the plans for the new Church vere drawn up. However, the Memorandum of Transfer was not signed until five weeks after the decision to build was made on June 19 1881 the Payneham Road Land.*

The opening services were held on Sunday August 20 1882.*
