History and Architecture:
.In 1841 Islington and Bowden were bracketed together as a preaching place in the March quarter plan of the Wesleyan Methodists and at the annual meeting of March 28 1842 there was a report of the Sunday school at Islington being closed.
In the 1850's Robert Burdon emigrated from England with parents John and Ann and began to but up areas of land around the chapel for the purposes of establishing a cemetery.
A Mr John Chambers subdivided an area which he named Reepham after a place in Lincolnshire. Mr Chambers offered a block of land 50 feet wide and 150 feet long to any denomination who would take it and build on it at once, and the Primitive Methodist took up this offer. As well Mr Chambers donated £10 to the build fund.
It was the primitive Methodists who, after the arrival of Joseph Long and John Wilson in October 1844, actually built the Primitive Methodist Chapel which was the ancestor of today’s church.
The Chapel was built of stone and iron in 1845 at a cost of £150.Records suggest the Chapel was located in Caroline Square (long disappeared). The church was built by T.H. Travail at a cost of £800.
The memorial stone was laid by Misses M. Rowe, E. Secomb, H. Travail and E. Burdon four ladies of the church on October 16 1882.
