History and Architecture:
There was a desire to commence preaching services with the aid of students from the College of the Bible (the Churches of Christ Theological College). This was discussed, but deferred because of the desire to procure a new building of their own. Land for this purpose was offered in three places and finally a site on Mr. William Holme's property at the south end of Arkwell's Lane was chosen as the most suitable and central. It was on this property that the new church building was erected.
The Church Building was opened in April 1911 with a Mission conducted by Mr Dickson of Hawthorn Church of Christ. He was assited by a Mr Manning.
In 1960 when the active membership was 95 the buildings were not large enough, and so again plans were made to build a new and larger Chapel.
A problem presented itself in later years in that the land originally given by William A. Holmes was not large enough to accommodate any new plans. This problem was solved by Mr. Victor Holmes, son of the late William A. Holmes, who then owned the land surrounding the church property. He subdivided his land and then donated an area sufficient to enable the plans to go ahead.
The plan was to shift the old chapel to the rear of the now enlarged block of land and so build a new one in its place, and adjoining the hall that was built in 1939. The Properties Corporation of the Churches of Christ came to aid the church with finance and together with practical aid and finance from the members the project was completed during the year 1960. Bill Morrison was the builder and Feary Bros. the Architects, so the brick chapel which stands today came into being at a reported cost of '7710. 12. 9. Once again the ladies guild came to the assistance and provided furniture and carpet for the new building.
