History and Architecture:

The first Mass held in Sandgate was held in 1865 by Fr Dunne at Hotel Brighton. Father James Connolly was Sacred Hearts first Parish Priest and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church was built and opened in 1881.

The present Sacred Heart Church at Sandgate was opened by Cardinal Moran of Sydney on 25 September 1892, exactly eleven years after the first church on the site was opened. The current Federation Gothic brick church was designed by prominent architect, William Caldwell, a resident of the Sandgate area.
