History and Architecture:

Father Martial Mary went to live at St. Helens (George's Bay) in 1878. He built a small timber church and presbytery. One of the most prominent Catholics at St. Helens at the turn of the century was Thomas Haley, "Manager for Messrs. Thureau's Deep Lead Tin Mining Company, the Carson De Bells Wolfram Company, and the New Zealand Fire Insurance Company". The Haley family and other parishioners gave generously for the new Church of St. Helen and St. Stanislaus. The builder, Mr. Oliver, was paid £1,009 for his work. It was completed by 1921. Father William Fitzgerald supervised the official opening on March 5, 1922.

A Foundation reads, " This stone was laid by the Most Rev Dr (William) Barry coadjutor Archbishop of Hobart on June 26th 1921. W.A. Urton Pastor".
