History and Architecture:
The first Anglican services were held in the Presbyterian Church.
The foundation stone of the first Christ Church, Tallangatta was laid by Archdeacon Langley in 1896. The stone has been preserved at the new site, four miles further east down the road. It was taken there before the enlargement of the Hume Weir which submerged the old town during the 1950's.
Prior to 1896, Lay Readers serviced Tallangatta as part of the Bethanga Districts.
The new brick church of Christ Church was built in 1956 as compensation for the submerging of the old church. Christ Church is a modem yet traditional building which contains some significant stained glass, particularly in the west end. The red brick tower of Christ Church still houses the old church bell which originally was brought from Saint Mary's Church, Caulfield.
A Foundation stone reads, " This Foundation stone was laid by Ven Archdeacon Langley March 8th 1898. Laver Fick & Vance Architects". A second Foundation stone reads, " To the Glory of God this stone was laid by His Excellency the Governor of Victoria General Sir Dallas Brooks KCB, KCM, KCVO DSO on September 25th 1955. Rector Rev R.C. Tavare Architect Oakley & Parks".
