History and Architecture:

The first Wesleyan church at Westbury was built in 1840.

One acre of ground was granted by the Surveyor - General under a location order to Rev's J Orton, J.A. Manton and W Simpson at Westbury on 15 November 1837. On this land in the year 1840 a chapel had been built costing £125.00  Although by 1851 the building proved to be too small for the congregation, steps to enlarge the structure was not taken until 1857.

In Gothic style the foundation stone was laid by Rev W A Quick on Tuesday 24 October 1865. Mr William and Son were the bricklayers, Messrs Scott and Tyson were the carpenters, Taylor and McEwen were the plasterers and Mr George Hedger of Windmill Hill were he painter and glazier according to the Chronicle Newspaper of 21 April 1866.

The Church is 60 feet long by 38 feet wide inside, and is capable of seating about 600 people. The windows are exceedingly neat and handsome and give a soft and beautiful light The large window in front reflects considerable credit on Mr Hedger. It is one of the neatest pieces of workmanship to be seen in Tasmania according to the Chronicle.

A plaque on a gate post reads, " Erected to the memory of Mr and Mrs John Gillam 2nd August 1959".
