The foundation stone was laid on the 2nd July 1914 by Mrs John Denney relict of Mr John Denney who was one of the Pioneer Methodists of the North West Coast. Today the church is in private hands and called Aberdeen Abbey.

Barrington is regarded as the birthplace of Methodism in the Sheffield district. The first settlers were led by John and Charles Coleman and were later joined by Alexander Smith, John Harmon, Benjamin Green, John Reeves, Charles Packett and William Smith, all members of the Methodist Church.

His shop which used to be on High Street was built in 1859at a cost of £6,000 and was said to be the finest country store in Tasmania. An article in the Daily Telegraph (Launceston, Tas. Mon 15 Nov 1886 reads, "Special services were held in the Primitive Methodist Church on Sunday, November 1, to celebrate the opening of the church, when the Rev. Mr Madson preached the morning and afternoon services to large congregations. The Church is now in private hands.
