The Church was opened early 1867. John King gave a corner of his property as a Glebe. Then in 1871 William Essington King gave two acres of land next to the church for the building of a rectory. The Glebe eventually became the home of the Archdeacon.

The first Roman Catholic church was planned in 1861 on the corner of School and Moora Streets, but was eventually burnt down. A new location was found at the corner of Phillips and Hume Streets. The foundation stone for this church was laid by the very Reverend TJ O'Connell on 16 September 1896. The construction was completed in 1897.
